Modern Egypt
Millions crowd Cairo's Tahrir Square in Protest (8 Feb 2011)
Egypt is a struggling nation and they are still classified as a third world country. There have been a number of wars and revolutions, the most recent being last year. The Egyptian people declared a revolution and wanted to overthrow Hosni Mubarak the President of Egypt for nearly 30 years. Prior to being President he was Vice President until the President was assassinated in October 1981.
The people of Egypt desperately wanted to see the end of Mubarak's regime and on the 25th of January 2011 there were uprisings all over Egypt and after 18 days of protest Mubarak resigned. During this time Cairo was described as a war zone and almost 850 people were killed and more than 6000 injured. However even after Mubarak's resignation the revolution had not ended, there were still protests all over Egypt over issues including police brutality, corruption, lack of freedom of speech and lack of elections, unemployment and minimum wages which continue to this day.
